The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University, Ames, IA seeks applicants for a 12-month tenured associate or full professor as the extension meat specialist. Position responsibilities are described as 70% extension, 20% research, and 10% administration (professor-in-charge) of the Iowa State University Meat Laboratory facility and staff.
The Extension Meat Specialist is responsible for the dissemination of information on meat science and meat technology to meat industry personnel, livestock producer groups, consumer groups, and the public in Iowa, nationally, and internationally. The Extension Meat Specialist provides subject matter expertise in the areas of; processed meat product production, sanitation, food safety and HACCP, carcass fabrication, carcass evaluation, meat quality, livestock harvest, merchandising, packaging, product handling and storage.
The successful candidate is expected to develop an effective and impactful extension program using innovative communication tools, including written, oral, and electronic media; establish an extramurally-funded research program that generates peer-reviewed publications; mentor graduate students in extension and research projects; and work collaboratively across the interface of disciplines that might include animal science, meat science and technology, food science, and economics.

Required Education and Experience:
PhD in meat science, animal science with an emphasis in meat processing technology or closely related discipline.
Candidates must also have a record of scholarship achievement commensurate with the department, college, and university’s standards for appointment to the rank of associate or full professor with tenure.
Demonstrated experience in extension programming and evaluation.
Experience conducting applied research related to meat science.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Strong communication skills as demonstrated by publications to external stakeholders and the scientific community.
Demonstrated ability to engage diverse stakeholders inside/outside the university preferred.
Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver extension education programs in a meat science extension program preferred.
Demonstrated ability to manage a budget and personnel within an extension/research/teaching unit (ISU Meat Lab) preferred.
Demonstrated success in acquiring extramural funding to support applied research and/or extension preferred.
