Responsible for working directly with upper level scientific personnel (e.g. Chief Science Officer or equivalent) to provide high level scientific expertise to routine laboratory service clientele, contract research customers, and FSNS personnel. Has regular communication and interaction with each of these parties and demonstrates expertise through regular public speaking engagements and written publications. Leads evaluation of new or improved methods for analyzing food products and environmental samples for continual expansion and enhancement of laboratory service offerings. Has an elevated level of responsibility with regard to contract research services, which includes, but is not limited to, coordination of research studies performed for large national accounts and other research studies requiring an elevated level of technical knowledge to ensure successful completion. Carries out all aspects of contract research services including proposal generation, budgeting, coordinating, executing, reporting results, and billing of contract research projects. Provides on-site client assistance for troubleshooting purposes or contract research projects as needed.
Maintains a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food industry regulations, issues, and trends.
Assists Chief Science Officer with identifying and evaluating new or improved food and environmental testing methods to ensure that the most up-to-date technology is provided to clientele.
Assist Chief Science Officer with coordinating vendor presentations, site visits, and in-lab evaluations of new technologies that can be utilized in routine laboratory testing to improve scientific applicability, analytical sensitivity, diagnostic sensitivity, diagnostic specificity, turn-around-time, reliability, ruggedness, and cost.
Frequently travels to attend scientific meetings and industry trade shows to stay abreast of current scientific, industry, and regulatory trends and to interact with clientele.
Continually seeks speaking engagements at scientific meetings and industry trade shows in order to demonstrate FSNS technical expertise.
Continually seeks involvement on committees for scientific and industry organizations in order to demonstrate FSNS technical expertise and stay abreast of current food safety trends.
Prepares technical writing pieces for periodicals and newsletters.
Works on developing proficient and manageable programs for new business resulting in company growth and profitability. This includes supporting sales staff in site visits with FSNS clientele in order to generate routine laboratory business revenue and revenue for contract research services.
Assumes an elevated level of responsibility in providing technical guidance for all levels of the company by participating in programs such as the Technical Manager training sessions and monthly technical webinars.
Responsive to customer needs in both routine laboratory services and contract research services.
Interacts directly with operational staff and clients to discuss food safety concerns, regulatory guidance, testing needs, and results.
Provides technical guidance to laboratory operations personnel via direct communication and TechAid responses.
Plans, proposes, and communicates with clients regarding contract research services. This position serves as a primary coordinator of contract research services for large national accounts and for other contract research services that pose a technical or scientific challenge to ensure successful completion.
Prepares and/or approves reports for said contract research services.
Coordinates and executes contract research services.
Prepares associated budgets for said contract research services.
Prepares billing for said contract research services.
Ensures that client satisfaction and concerns are properly addressed by providing technical assistance for corrective action investigations.
Authors or reviews standard operating procedures for routine laboratory testing procedures and non-routine specialized testing.
Assists Chief Science Officer to develop proficient and manageable programs for new contract research service business resulting in company growth and profitability, by assisting with development and improvement of marketing materials, client visits, and sales presentations.
Travels for and assists with in-plant investigations and troubleshooting for FSNS clients.
May have supervisory responsibilities. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Ph.D. in Food Science & Technology, Microbiology, Meat Science or related field required
Working knowledge of aseptic sampling technique, automated lab equipment, and acceptable methods and procedures
Familiarity with USDA MLG, FDA BAM, CMMEF, APHA, and AOAC methods and procedures
Broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of a food testing laboratory
International food processing and retail experience preferred.
Five years industrial food safety and quality assurance
Applied food analysis experience with multiple food types and multiple laboratories preferred
Or equivalent combination of education and experience
