he College of Agriculture/Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station is seeking a visionary leader as Director of the Auburn University Food Systems Institute (AUFSI). The mission of AUFSI is to facilitate innovative research and support interdisciplinary collaborations in food systems (broadly defined to include growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, marketing, consuming and disposing of food from plant and animal sources). This is a full time, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment with administration and teaching/outreach responsibilities. The position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Research and Associate Director, College of Agriculture and the Alabama Agriculture Experiment Station (AAES) while collaborating with administrators, faculty, and staff located throughout the college, AAES, Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES), and Auburn University.
Responsibilities: The Director will be expected to provide leadership and direction for AUFSI and develop a vision for facilitating innovative research and center sustainability. The successful candidate will work to promote faculty collaboration across disciplines and development of interdisciplinary teams to proactively develop proposals and secure extramural funding. This should include establishment of appropriate working groups around strategic and emerging themes/opportunities. The successful candidate will have a broad vision and strategy for enhancing engagement with the private sector, specifically the food industry. The position will identify new initiatives and communicate extramural funding opportunities, advance scholarship within the center by improving outcomes and impact, facilitate collaboration with other centers/programs, and improve reputation of the AUFSI nationally and globally. The successful candidate will possess the ability to engage with faculty, federal agencies, foundations and the private sector.
Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in food science or a related field and experience in the food industry. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated experience in industry/private sector engagement. Other qualifications include demonstrated leadership experience; development of interdisciplinary teams; engagement with diverse audiences and stakeholders including agency leaders, commodity groups, elected officials and industry leaders; and excellent interpersonal communication skills. Desired qualifications include the ability to develop and execute innovative vision and strategies for growing the AUFSI including enhanced engagement with the private sector and facilitation of university-industry partnerships.
