The purpose of this position is to lead regulatory affairs for Essentia North America, including domestic, international, and import/export regulatory needs. Additionally, this position will support the department and the business by providing leadership in quality systems such as organic program management, technical customer communication and other emerging program needs.
Minimum four-year degree in a science or engineering discipline, business management, or quality sciences.
Demonstrated career growth (history of growth in role (scope and/or responsibility expansion)) required. 3-5 years regulatory experience strongly preferred. Experience in food manufacturing, food safety and quality, and/or food regulatory desired. Direct experience with USDA-FSIS a plus.
Responsible for all regulatory activities with key emphasis on labeling (USDA, FDA) and gaining new market / channel access.
Partner with colleagues in Denmark and Spain to help US products gain international market access and to help products produced in Europe gain US / Canada access.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with individuals working in political and regulatory positions within the government and other influential organizations (including but not limited to USDA-FSIS, USDA-APHIS, AAFCO, and CFIA).
Maintain a working knowledge of key North American regulatory agencies’ areas of authority and jurisdiction and network with key individuals within key agencies (including but not limited to USDA-FSIS, USDA-APHIS, CFIA, and AAFCO) to build positive relationships.
Maintain a high level of knowledge on domestic and international regulatory requirements in order to alert Essentia decision makers of potential market opportunities and risks to existing or potential markets.
Manage USDA-FSIS label approval process and documentation for Essentia facilities.
Assist Customer Service to maintain product registrations, assure smooth clearance of export and import of products through customs, and resolve export detainment issues promptly.
Manage Essentia organic program, including relationship with QAI and all renewal and program requirements for Essentia facilities.
Lead, direct or participate in cross functional teams including Operations, Customer Service, Innovation, Applications and Finance for problem solving, planning and project execution.
Develop and maintain Quality Systems knowledge to support Essentia Quality and Regulatory efforts, including customer communication needs, collateral documentation development and internal/customer audits.
Manage emerging programs relating to animal welfare, social welfare, and/or sustainability at the discretion of the Executive Team.
Maintain a working knowledge of company quality standards and processes.
Prepare and present reports to peers, management and senior leadership.
Develop, maintain and continually improve relationships with operations and quality management teams at co-manufacturers, suppliers and manufacturing plants.
Interact with regulatory affairs staff from other LGI companies for the purpose of providing input (as needed), identifying ideas for use within Essentia and implementing regulatory process best practices.
Field all customer inquiries as they pertain to local, state, and federal regulations.
Any other duties as assigned by the Executive Leadership team.
Maintain concrete knowledge and application skills with regard to essential food and pet food safety principles.
Understand, analyze, interpret and communicate complex government rules & regulations, and technical information as well as present the information to LGI personnel, customers, etc.
Maintain a high level of confidentiality related to all duties and responsibilities, such as the proprietary information of vendors and customers.
Knowledge of organizational methods and the ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with LGI personnel, contractors, vendors, suppliers, customers, and other business-related contacts.

Think, work, organize and handle responsibility on your own with minimal support staff or personnel.
Travel internationally and domestically (10-20% travel)
Regular attendance and willingness to shift schedule and work extended hours if needed.
