Description: The Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks to employ a 9-month, tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank in Animal Genetics/Genomics to begin prior to the Autumn 2023 semester or once a suitable candidate is found. The anticipated distribution of effort for the position is 65% Research and 35% Teaching within the Department of Animal Sciences.

Expectations: The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in animal genetics, with a focus on genomic technologies that can be used to address challenges in animal agriculture, ensure food security, and provide sustainable advancements in agriculture. The ideal candidate will establish a sustainable research program that increases our expertise of livestock genomes and complements the expertise of the department. Expertise and future research priorities should advance scientific knowledge in areas important to the agri-food industry, including but not limited to:  the optimization of qualitative genetic selection to improve production systems and to minimize environmental impacts of production systems, the interactions between phenotype and genotype with emphasis on improving animal efficiency, health, and well-being, the use of quantitative genetics and bioinformatics to improve animal breeding programs, and the validation of regulatory target genes using functional genomics. The successful applicant is expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program that is independently supported with extramural funding. The successful applicant is also expected to strategically collaborate with current faculty in the Department, the College, and the University. Teaching expectations for this position include contributing to existing courses within our program and may include developing new courses, as well as training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Of particular emphasis for this position is the undergraduate course entitled “Principles of Genetic Improvement”. Although there are no formal extension responsibilities, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas of the Land Grant Institution (Research, Teaching, and Extension). Faculty members at the Ohio State University have a shared responsibility to support and sustain the CFAES Principles of Community, convey good citizenship, and interact collegially.

Preferred Qualifications: Requirements include a doctorate degree in Animal Sciences, Genetics, Genomics, or a closely allied discipline. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research and teaching efforts in animal sciences is desired. Experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, and experience in working with and mentoring members of underrepresented groups is preferred. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
